Trip to Costa Rica

Beyond the All-Inclusive: Why Costa Rica Keeps Calling Us Back

Having visited Costa Rica 6 times, I can confidently say it is a destination that never grows old. Every return trip reveals something new, whether it’s a quiet jungle trail, a freshly discovered local soda serving home-cooked meals, or a rare wildlife sighting high in the canopy.

While Costa Rica certainly offers all-inclusive resorts, and they can be a great fit for travellers looking to completely unwind, staying strictly on a resort means missing out on what makes the country truly extraordinary. Costa Rica is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth, packed into a country small enough that you can easily explore towering volcanoes, misty cloud forests, and wild coastlines all in a single trip.

1. Misty Cloud Forests & Volcanic Peaks

Stepping into Monteverde’s Cloud Forest feels like entering another world. Walking across suspension bridges canopy-high in the mist, surrounded by orchids, mosses, and the calls of exotic birds, is an experience no traditional beach resort can match.

Further north, the iconic Arenal Volcano towers over natural hot springs, waterfall hikes, and lush rainforests filled with sloths, toucans, and howler monkeys.

2. Pura Vida Culture & Incredible Wildlife

Costa Rica’s national ethos, "Pura Vida" (the pure life), is more than a greeting—it’s a mindset centred on warmth, hospitality, and a deep respect for nature. Over 25% of the country’s land is preserved in national parks and reserves, meaning you don't need to look hard to find wildlife. From sea turtles nesting on protected shores to capuchin monkeys swinging through the trees, nature meets you at every turn.

3. The Caribbean Side: Wild Canals & Laid-Back Beach Towns.

If you are looking for something decidedly uncommercialized, the Caribbean coast offers an entirely different rhythm.

Tortuguero National Park: Often called the "Amazon of Costa Rica," this remote northern stretch is accessible only by boat or small plane. Exploring its winding jungle canals by boat is an incredible wildlife experience, where you can spot caimans, river otters, toucans, and spider monkeys. It’s also one of the most important nesting sites in the Western Hemisphere for endangered green sea turtles.

Puerto Viejo & Cahuita: Further down the coast, towns like these offer a wonderfully relaxed vibe. Paved roads give way to bicycle trails, reggae beats drift through the sea breeze, and Afro-Caribbean flavours dominate the local menus. The beaches here are wild, fringed with palms, and surrounded by national parks where the rainforest meets a pristine sea.
