World Rhino Day always takes me right back to a trip to South Africa in 2018.

We were leaving one camp and heading to the next, so excited because that evening we were scheduled for a night safari, our big chance to hopefully see rhinos in the wild.

Then came the phone call. Our guide heard from the head office: the drive had to be cancelled. Poachers had been reported in the area. We were crushed, but of course, we understood completely. They were, after all, doing it for our safety.

A few hours later, we stopped at a picnic area and gift shop for lunch. Browsing the shelves, we joked with each other, pointing at the plush toys. "Well, at least we found the stuffed rhinos!”

Right then, my husband walked in and whispered, “Rhinos.”

We thought he was pulling our leg. But we walked outside, looked over toward the watering hole, and there they were, three rhinos, with two of them head-butting right in front of us. We were absolutely elated. Instead of us going out to find them, the rhinos came to us.

As if the day couldn't get any better, as we continued on our drive later that afternoon, we came across this incredible mother and her baby (check out the video, sound up, and watch to the end).

What started as a huge disappointment turned into one of the most unforgettable, magical days of my life. Happy World Rhino Day; may we continue to protect these magnificent creatures.
