What One Quiet Stretch of Sand Taught Me About How I Want to Travel

If you’ve been following along with me for a while, you know that my heart will always belong to off-the-beaten-track travel, local connections, and experiencing a destination on its own authentic terms.

Don’t get me wrong, while there is absolutely a time and place for the effortless ease of a traditional all-inclusive resort (sometimes you just need a lounge chair, a cold drink, and zero decisions to make!), my favourite memories are rarely born inside a gates-up complex.

There’s a very specific, predictable rhythm to mega-resorts: early morning rushes to claim sun loungers, colour-coded wristbands, crowded buffets, and the constant background hum of organized pool games. For a quick reset, that works. But for those who travel to truly connect with a place, the real magic happens when you step past the high-rise gates and let local knowledge lead the way.

Even years later, when I close my eyes and think of the ultimate beach day, my mind immediately wanders back to a quiet afternoon in Bali.

The Day Koming Showed Us a Real Bali Beach

During a trip to Bali, we asked our amazing driver, Koming, if he could take us somewhere truly local. Somewhere far removed from the commercial tourist hubs. He knew just the place and navigated narrow, winding lanes past quiet village temples and lush green groves in eastern Bali.

We parked and walked down a hill to beautiful Virgin Beach (known locally as Pantai Pasir Putih).

It was pure, unhurried peace. There were no massive resort complexes framing the bay, no jet skis, no vendors pushing souvenirs, and no crowd noise. The soft sand was shared mostly by local families relaxing by the water and a few expats tucked under the shade of the trees with their books.

We rented some beach chairs and settled in for the afternoon. Sitting there with our feet in the sand, floating in the calm waters, was a quiet reminder of why these travel moments stick with us for life. It wasn't about lavish amenities; it was about connection, leaving a light footprint, and supporting the small family businesses where we had lunch and beverages.

I still think about that amazing beach day often, and it continues to inspire how I curate coastal getaways today.

Seeking Out the Unscripted Coastlines

If you love the ocean and the sand and want to trade the resort crowd for local character and natural beauty, here are just a few extraordinary corners of the world to consider for your next escape:

Close to Home & The Caribbean

  • Bonaire: A quiet Dutch-Caribbean island that has deliberately avoided mass-market resort development. Entirely surrounded by a protected marine park, life here moves at a leisurely pace—think shore diving right off the gravel beaches, colourful shorelines, and family-owned seafood spots in Kralendijk.

  • Little Corn Island, Nicaragua: A tiny, car-free island in the Caribbean with no big resorts, reachable by a local panga boat. Life here moves to the rhythm of walking paths, small beachside guesthouses, and fresh lobster dinners at local family spots.

  • Dominica: Known as the "Nature Island," it swaps white-sand resort strips for dramatic volcanic black sand, lush rainforest backdrops, and tranquil coastal villages that feel completely removed from cruise ship crowds.

A Little Further Afield

  • The Andaman Islands, India: Far out in the Bay of Bengal, islands like Havelock (Swaraj Dweep) offer endless stretches of soft sand backed by tropical forest rather than large complexes, ideal for slow mornings and quiet reef exploration.

  • Zambiani & Paje, Zanzibar (Tanzania): Away from the northern resort clusters, the southeastern coast of Zanzibar offers miles of tide-shifting white sand, traditional wooden dhow boats, and quiet eco-lodges integrated into local fishing villages.

Stepping off the beaten track doesn't mean sacrificing comfort; it simply means opening the door to deeper, more lasting memories. There are possibilities all over this beautiful planet. Let's chat!
